The Center for Effective Philanthropy introduces our recent research on rural philanthropy and foundation-to-foundation collaboration, which summarizes insights from empirical findings. Rural philanthropy and foundation collaboration are unique, but often intersecting areas of practice. Researching these two areas of philanthropic practice yielded rich findings to guide foundations in developing effective rural grant making and in working with other funders.
There are many important issues to consider when preparing for, and coordinating foundation-to-foundation collaboration, but planning is too often hindered by a paucity of empirical guidance for navigating dynamics often underlying collaboration. The existing literature offers a variety of theoretical frameworks and recommended strategies for improving foundation collaboration. Unfortunately, too little of this guidance is based upon evidence-based research.
